John Barnes, Class XXXI
Re-nominated in May 2019, John Barnes is serving his fifth consecutive year on the Board of Directors of Leadership Houston and his second term as the Board’s Secretary. John previously served one term as LH’s Outside Counsel and a Member-at-Large, during which time he authored the organization’s amended by-laws and the current fiscal policy. The following two years, John served as LH’s Treasurer, chairing both the Finance Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee that was responsible for the relocation of LH’s offices to their current address.
John is a Fellow of Class XXXI, having served as co-chair for Class XXXI’s project, a sustainable, outdoor fitness center at McReynolds Middle School in the Denver Harbor neighborhood.
John graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1994 with a degree in political science and received his juris doctorate from South Texas College of Law in 1997, trying his first matter before a jury within months of receiving his license. In 2017, John established his own law firm, representing a variety of clients in residential and commercial real estate, construction and finance matters, as well as general business law and both corporate and non-profit governance.
In addition to Leadership Houston and his professional activities, John was recently elected to the City Council of the City of West University Place. John is also a member of the Rotary Club of West U, where he currently serves as its Assistant Treasurer. John and his wife, Susan, are members of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and are active supporters of Texas Children’s Hospital, DePelchin Children’s Center and Communities in Schools.
