November 15, 2009
By Michele Cowart
  • Leadership Houston hosted the 2009 Alumni Breakfast at the Junior League of Houston, Friday, November 13, 2009. Representatives from each class filled the room as long-time, mini-reunions abounded.

Bright and early, Leadership Houston Board Members, Lucretia Ahrens, Sean Carter, Eric Dargan, Juanita Garner, Julie Gorte, and Dick Huebner, as well as dedicated alumnus Jeff Wallace, arrived to help set up. The full-color, 2009 LH Alumni Directory, 2010 Calendar of Events, Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities, and the ground-breaking Passport to Progress Program were distributed to all in attendance. Thank you volunteers!

Highlighting the innovative plans for the year, Sean Carter, development director for the Rothko Chapel, Class XIX, and vice president of fundraising for LH (to name a few) and Marilyn Brown, LH President and CEO emceed the event. Recognizing each class in attendance, current board members, and introducing the newest Class XXVIII, helped energize the room in preparation for, "the ask."

"It was a spectacular turnout by Leadership Houston Alumni," said Marilyn, "I met so many interested and excited members and look forward to connecting with them about future LH projects."

Macy Bodenhamer, Patrice Johnson Award Winner in Class XXVII, Class XXVIII vice-chair and Class XXIX chair spoke of her unforgettable experiences with Leadership Houston.

"My Leadership Houston experience rewarded me with unexpected new relationships I now carry with me, empowered me with new knowledge to impact positive change, and challenged me to become a better leader in all that I do."

As Class XXVII Project Coordinator, Macy and the project committee collaborated with the Museum of Cultural Arts (MOCAH) to design, create, and raise funds for this award-winning mural of art called "This is Houston" located at 2615 Montrose. The Leadership Houston 2010 Passport to Progress Program was revealed during breakfast. This one-of-a-kind series encourages Leadership Houston Alumni, current class members and their guests to "travel the world while never leaving Houston to experience the richness in diversity our city offers." The 2010 travel itinerary includes: Turkey in April, Australia in June, Mexico in August, and India in October. Last, but not least, Dick Huebner, president of the Houston Minority Business Council, LH Chair Elect and Class XXIX spoke regarding the three steps to contribute to LH.

"Leadership Houston needs your support in three ways. Give a gift, get engaged, and promote Leadership Houston in the community," said Huebner.

The Leadership Houston Alumni Breakfast was a successful event. The staffs, board members appreciate your attendance and look forward to seeing you at other alumni events in the future. Click here to view more picture on the Leadership Houston Facebook Page.
