I first met Austin James during Leadership Houston Class XXVII's Cultural Arts Day. Austin joined our table for lunch in the Green Room of the Wortham Theatre. There were about 10 representatives of Houston's diverse arts scene on hand discussing theatre, music, dance, visual arts and their impacts on Houston's economy and way of life. It was a cool way to meet local artists.
During our discussion of art and business and the business of art, I mentioned that the Leadership Houston walls were bare in our new suite and really needed a pick-me-up. I asked Austin if he would be willing to showcase some pieces in our desperate space. Austin agreed. (Yes!)
Marilyn loved the idea as well. She contacted Austin to discuss our options. He came into the office with measuring tape and some great ideas. Most noticeably were his hands. He has the hands of an artist; rough and paint-stained. There was paint under his finger nails and around his cuticles. Paint that will never be completely cleaned either because he is always painting or he needs a new scrub brush. This is a sign of a true and dedicated artist.
Austin brought 2 pieces to our office. One is called Carnival and is displayed in my office perfectly against the turquoise accent wall. The second piece is called Ferris and displayed in the main office area.
It turns out that Austin James is married to Blakely Bering, descendent of John Bering and Anna Margaret of Germany. They landed on Galveston in 1846 and settled in Houston. You may recognize such streets as Augusta and Bering. Needless to say, there is lots of family history in Houston for the Berings.
Team them up with the James' and you get an awesome Gallery, Bering & James Art Gallery. Founded in 2001, the gallery deals in commercial art leasing, project consultation, installation, private events and creating beautiful contemporary pieces that would look fantastic in your space. With a stable of 30 artists represented, Bering & James art "lends energy and excitement to any surrounding". Visit http://www.beringandjames.com for more details.
Thanks to Austin James and Blakely Bering of Bering & James Art Gallery for allowing us to showcase these 2 powerfull pieces in our office.
